UI Water Sustainability Initiative
The University of Iowa has established a Water Sustainability Initiative, including 10 new faculty positions for interdisciplinary "cluster hiring" to advance research, education, and outreach on sustainability. Motivated by one of 14 Grand Challenges from the National Academy of Engineering -- "provide access to clean water" -- the University expands its existing strength in interdisciplinary research on water including its availability, quality, reuse, health impacts, and its relationship to a changing climate. Economics, policy, and law as well as the natural sciences and engineering are all engaged to solve the problems of water.

Life in Iowa City
Iowa certainly has the undeserved reputation of endless seas of corn. Eastern Iowa is strongly influenced by the Mississippi and its tributaries and the scenic beauty of the resulting rolling topography rivals that of any across the Midwest. Whether it is hiking nearby Sugar Bottom, sailing Lake Macbride, or visiting the venerable Amana Colonies, there is a vast array of activities for everyone around the region. In fact, both Outside Magazine and National Geographic Adventure Magazine rate Iowa City one of the best places to live:
Iowa City itself, of course, has the wonderful reputation of many Midwestern university towns. A
vibrant intellectual and cultural atmosphere, diverse international community, a dynamic downtown full of shops and restaurants that is adjacent to campus, great public education system, friendly people, affordable homes, easy commutes, and many other assets that make it one of the highest ranked cities in the country:
- Men's Journal Lists Iowa City as "Healthiest Town in the United States"
- MSN CareerBuilder No. 10 for "Best Cities with Jobs"
- Forbes Magazine No. 8 "Top Up and Coming Tech Cities"
- Forbes Magazine No. 10 "Smartest City"
- Forbes Magazine No. 2 "Best Small Metro Cities for Career"
- Kiplinger No. 10 "Smart Places to Live"
- Corporation for National and Community Service No. 2 "Volunteering"
